Two white gay men commenting on two gay black men who pass them wearing Prada and Chanel. (via microaggressions)
This is what I would like to present as an example of intersectionality within the queer/LGBT/GSM community. A lot of people—too many people, to be honest—are seriously shocked to hear of racism (or any other issues such as ableism, class, etc) within the queer community. “We’re all oppressed as one thing, so there’s no way we’d oppress another!” Yeah, no. Your being queer does not render you incapable of being oppressive towards people, and your oppression does not mean you are not an oppressor. Dan Savage is a huge example of a gay man with some racism on his sleeve, and the fact that people choose to ignore that in favor of his (L)G(B)(T)/GSM activism (no I’m not including the other letters because Savage is anti-bi/trans and not for anyone who ISN’T a gay man) disgusts me. When I was working as a straight ally for a LGBT group here in LA, I had a number of POC members complain that the West Hollywood chapter was dissuading them from attending a Pride event because they didn’t want it to turn “ghetto”. I was stunned.

Remember: just because you are a minority in one area, does not give you a free ride to be prejudice in others. We ALL have some privileges to keep in mind (yes, even you person with access to the Internet)
